1 - 3
Wimbledon
Jimmy Green, Ron Head, Harry Stannard

Stannard and Haydock were back after their representative honours and Len Cannon, after a game in the strollers, returned to the full-back position in place of Cousins. Don Rhodes had recovered sufficiently to lead the attack (obviously not a fractured ankle after all then), with Green moving outside in place of Jim Smith who was away in Scotland.

Woking were anxious to reverse the run of four victories gained over them by Wimbledon on their own pitch the previous season, and got off to a good start when Boxall gave them the lead after a quarter of an hour had lasped, but it was against the run of play and the Dons could already have been two up by then, Green shooting wide in too much of a rush after receiving a pass from Stannard and Rhodes wasting a good chance by inopportunely drifting offside at the crucial moment. But it only took ten minutes for the visitors to draw level, Head scoring from a free-kick a few yards outside the area, then Green gave them the lead, chasing down a ball that appeared to be running out of play before firing a cross-shot that deceived Eastaff and ended up in the net. Woking reshuffled and came back into the game, but Green’s speed and determination saw him frequently outwit Braithwaite and on one such occasion he crossed to Stannard, whose snap-shot crashed back off the cross-bar to safety.

Woking had the best of the early exchanges after the break, but the best chance fell to Rhodes, running onto a ball between the backs from Stannard, but he fluffed the opportunity. Both forward lines were going for it, but both defences stood up until 15 minutes from time before the Dons clinched the points. Eastaff came out to claim a cross from Head, but Stannard beat him to it and cleverly headed it around the keeper before slotting the ball into an empty net.
