Asuperb team performance from AFC Wimbledon saw them progress to the next round of the FA Youth cup at Hayes & Yeading's Church road ground last night.
On a massive but good quality pitch both sides looked to get the ball down and play. AFC Wimbledon settled well early on and though the play was very open and end to end the Dons had some early chances.
As early as the second minute a fine cross field ball from Dunne opened up the space for Gambin to knock in a dangerous cross that was half cleared to Danny Carter - he rifled in another cross where a Joe Jackson touch saw the Hayes keeper pull off a fine save.
After 10 minutes a Knock corner found an unmarked Callum Wellburn who should have scored but his miss-timed header was saved. Then after 24 minutes Wellburn made up for his error when a Gambin corner again found him in space; this time his fine diving header giving the Hayes keeper no chance.
It wasn't all one way with Jack Turner in the Dons goal pulling off a great one v one save when it looked like the forward was past him, followed by another fine save, diving smartly to his left to parry a shot round the post. Wimbledon looked dangerous from set plays and it was from aother corner on 42 minutes that they increased the lead. Harry Knock was the provider this time, finding Rhys Turner whose excellent header flashed past the keeper for a 2-0 lead at half time.
Hayes & Yeading started the second half well and pinned the Dons back into their half early on. AFC Wimbledon were again indebted to Jack Turner when a cross from the left went to the back post where a Hayes forward fired in a fierce drive but Turner was equal to it and pushed it round the post.
This was a good as it got for the hosts as the young Dons now started to dominate the game. They killed off their opponents after 67 minutes when good play in midfield saw an exquisite lob from Callum Dunne find Matt Harmsworth in behind the defence - he held off the defender to finish well. An injury to Rhys Turner saw Wilson Gondwe come on at left back with the outstanding Carter moving to central defence. Another injury, this time to winger Luke Gambin saw him replaced by Josh Ayres and then with 15 minutes to go the hard-working Harmsworth was replaced by Charlie Hamsher.
Wimbledon could have added a couple more goals to their scoreline as they opened up the Hayes defence at will in the last 15 minutes. Hamsher, who looked sharp and hungry, had two or three good opportunities with the home keeper making a couple of good saves. In the end this was a fine team performance which sees the Dons play away to the winners of Thamesmead Town or North Greenford United.
