Perhaps anticipating an easy victory given the previous week’s rout, Wimbledon gave a debut at full-back to young AH Joy, but maybe they hadn’t taken account of the infamous sloping Loakes Park pitch or the pride of the home team in front of their own fans after the result seven days before. For Wycombe, only Crump retained his place in defence, although Strong moved from half-back to full-back.

For the first fifteen minutes, though, it looked like a repeat might be on, as Wycombe again failed to get over the half-way line. Guest’s goal after half an hour, a magnificent 25-yard-drive, was the culmination of more pressure from the home side. Joy, in what would prove to be his only senior game, was adjudged out of his depth, but he was unlucky to give away the penalty that gave the Wanderers their fourth goal, the referee believing his fair tackle on Chubb was from behind. McCullum beat Jim Haydock from the spot kick.

The second half saw spirited attacks from both sides, and a much more even game resulted, with Stannard firing home a centre from Laws before Birdseye replied with the home side’s fifth.
