An unchanged team, with just a positional shuffle to the forward line, welcomed a St. Albans side who had won their previous eight games to a treacherously waterlogged Plough Lane for an Isthmian League fixture. Wimbledon attacked right from the off, and Head sent in a centre that Stannard would have surely scored from had he been able to keep his footing, but he completely missed the ball from only a few yards out. But it still only took seven minutes for the home side to draw first blood, Laker totally deceiving Gibbons with a cross-shot. Another chance was wasted when Smith floundered in the mud as Stannard’s cross sailed past. Gibbons saved well from both Stannard and Smith and was then saved by Collings after Stannard had lobbed the ball over his head and goal-wards. |
