For the third consecutive cup tie the Dons faced Athenian League opposition. Despite a drenching downpour over 8,000 turned up to see an unchanged team welcome high-flying Wealdstone, who had beaten, Wimbledon’s London Senior Cup conquerors, Sutton United, in the previous round. The Stones, assisted by a strong wind which accompanied the rain, adapted quicker to the sodden pitch, which was soon under a couple of inches of water, and took the lead after thirteen minutes when Moore, the outside right, broke away and, although Haydock positioned himself to block his shot, Majoram nipped in first to deflect the ball wide of the keeper with his head. Despite the tricky conditions underfoot the visitors’ forwards kept the ball moving and the defence came under increasing pressure, but Lister was the pick of a resolute rearguard and once the rain ceased the home side more than held their own for the remainder of the half. Smith found the net, but it was ruled out for offside, and Laker forced Hill to tip his shot over the bar. Wimbledon ended the half by forcing five corners, but the equaliser wouldn’t come. |
