Ron Digweed deputised for Ken Lister, who was suffering from a strained groin, and Billy Laws was preferred to Les Dowding, else it was an unchanged side that made the short trip to Chiswick in search of more Isthmian League points. Corinthian-Casuals were much improved and had a live-wire attack, ably lead by Abbott. It was he who took advantage of a defensive slip to give them the lead after eleven minutes. Five minutes later debutant Laws forced Wade to concede a corner, which he took himself and found Charlie Smith who headed an equaliser. The Dons’ centre-forward then forced Hounslow to save at the second attempt and Harry Stannard forced the keeper to fumble with a sharp header, but Cambridge was on hand to clear. Three times Jack Wallis ran through but shot wide. Renny then got past Digweed and, although his shot was deflected by a defender, Abbott was lurking nearby and placed the ball past Haydock. Wimbledon hit back quickly when Stannard intercepted a pass to the wing and fed the ball to Charlie Smith, his resultant shot was going in anyway, but Harry Bull was on hand to make sure. |
