With Ken Lister fit again he returned at the expense of Ron Digweed, and Doug Munday came in for a debut alongside him in place of injured Jack Wallis, with Les Dowding returning to the forward line instead of Harry Bull. Hamlet took the lead in the opening minute when box-of-tricks winger Davies crossed the ball, Maggs miskicked and Beglan, deputising for Jover, played the ball for Phebey to beat Haydock with a header. The home defence was overwhelmed by the visitors for most of the first half and did well to keep the visitors to the solitary goal during that time. The home forward line were disjointed in comparison and the nearest they came to scoring was when Jim Smith got his head to a cross from Dowding, but the Dulwich keeper jumped across the goal and saved comfortably. Haydock was left out of position after saving a shot from Gray but when Davies hit the ball towards goal Woods was on hand to clear off the line. Haydock’s next excursion was more successful as he dived at Phebey’s feet to smother a certain goal. |
