Unsurprisingly the same team that had beaten Dulwich Hamlet was selected for the second visit to Bromley in under a month, albeit in the hope of doing rather better than the last time at Hayes Lane. On the day Jock Woods had failed to recover from the leg injury suffered the previous week so Bill Cousins, himself struggling to get over a long term injury, was drafted in at left-back. Bromley were in top gear, and Wimbledon’s hopes of progressing to the next round of the London Senior Cup would mean a repeat of the Dulwich performance and a below par effort from Bromley, but it was evident from early on that neither would happen. Bromley started off at a great pace, their forwards having both speed and thrust, and were dangerous from anywhere within thirty yards of goal. It took them only ten minutes to take the lead, Brown crossing the ball to Ruddy, who cut in a beat Jim Haydock with a low drive. Ruddy was finding himself in acres of space whenever he received the ball and time and again sent in dangerous crosses that caused considerable anxiety in the Dons’ defence. Ron Head had a chance to equalise, but put the ball over, and the home defence coped with three consecutive corners. However Bromley retained the upper hand and it was a relieved visiting eleven that made their way back to the dressing room at half-time with only the solitary strike against them. |
