With Doug Munday still suffering from an abscess on his toe Billy Cousins was promoted from the reserves with Bob Seares, who replaced the unavailable Charlie Smith in attack. City had scored six goals in their previous outing, and started as if they meant to repeat the feat but, after a frenetic opening spell in which they did everything bar put the ball in the net, Wallis and Field broke down their supply and the Dons slowly gained the initiative. Sears and Derek Clarke frequently outwitted the visiting defence and Jim Smith was always dangerous. Clarke got the decisive first goal after eighteen minutes and it wasn’t until just before the interval that St. Albans again worried Jim Haydock, a twenty yard drive from Griffiths passing just wide. Smith countered with a cross-shot that keeper Sullivan did well to gather. |
