Aspecial train, costing just 1 shilling and 10 pence (8p) for the return journey, took supporters of both clubs to Selhurst Park for the Surrey Senior Cup final. With around eight thousand spectators looking on, two first half goals from veteran Tooting striker Bob Parker, playing his last game for the club, meant the cup ended up at Sandy Lane. Despite Gauntlett equalising the Terrors centre forward’s first effort the Dons found themselves behind at half time. In the second period Boxall had a glorious chance to shoot for goal but decided to pass the Stannard instead and when the Dons stalwart back heeled the ball into the path of Emeny-Smith the Tooting defenders crowded him out. Alan Hooper had to make three fine saves in the closing stages as gaps opened up in the Wimbledon defence as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser. |
