Stockport old boy Kevin Cooper returned to Edgeley Park to help Wimbledon gain their first win in six matches.

The winger, who moved to Selhurst Park for £1m last march, kept his old team rooted to the foot of Division One.

It took Cooper just 30 seconds to fire the Londoners ahead - and he was also involved in Wimbledon's second goal in the 32nd minute.

A slip by Finnish international Petri Helin at the start of the game allowed David Connolly to set up Cooper, who finished clinically with a left-foot shot from 15 yards.

It was the worst possible start for the Hatters, who had lost their last three games without scoring.

Four players were booked in the first half alone, including County player-boss Carlton Palmer was perhaps fortunate not to be cautioned for two off-the-ball fouls.

It was a foul by Leo Roget on Cooper which earned him a booking and saw Terry Burton's team double their advantage.

Neal Ardley took a quick free-kick and Connolly reacted quickest to drive in a low shot for his 12th goal of the campaign.

County dragged themselves back into contention with a controversial goal five minutes from half-time.

Striker Aaron Wilbraham ended his side's goal drought, and when a linesman flagged for an infringement referee Graham Frankland awarded the goal.

In the second period Davis came to Wimbledon's rescue with saves from Mike Flynn and Kevin Ellison.
