David Nielsen proved the match winner as Norwich edged out Wimbledon.

The striker, on-loan from Wimbledon, scored one and earned a penalty as the Dons' decision to allow Nielsen to play against them back-fired.

He opened the scoring after just 16 minutes with a glorious diving header.

And then produced a mazy run from the halfway line to earn the spot-kick which put the Canaries two up early in the second half.

Nielsen was stopped in his tracks by a combination of Darren Holloway and Kenny Cunningham.

Iwan Roberts converted the penalty.

Dons keeper Kelvin Davis was sent off just before for throwing the ball at Nielsen, who remains a Wimbledon colleague.

And the Dons were later reduced to nine men when Jermaine Darlington saw red for aiming a kick at Steen Nedergaard.

By then the visitors had pulled one back through a David Connolly spot-kick but hard though they tried Wimbledon could not find an equaliser.

But the Canaries did face one or two anxious moments near the end.

However, substitute Alex Notman should really have made the point safe but somehow contrived to side foot wide with the goal at his mercy.

That led to an anxious last few minutes but the Canaries managed to hold on for the win which takes them within a point of second-placed Wolves.
