Isthmian League

Clapton
0 - 2
Wimbledon
Jimmy Smith, Jack Wallis

Jock Woods returned to the full-back pair with recovered Ron Head trying out at half-back for the Dons visit to the Spotted Dog ground.

But it turned out to be a straightforward tussle between the home defence and the visiting attack. Under almost constant pressure the Clapton backs and halves kept their cool and in goal veteran Robson proved himself one of the most capable custodians in the Isthmian League, saving his side from a trouncing. Charlie Smith’s form was greatly improved, no doubt due to a prolonged run of games, and he made some excellent openings with headers and deft passes, but Wimbledon were unable to open the scoring in the first period.
In fact it wasn’t until fifteen minutes before the end that the breakthrough came, and then there were two goals in as many minutes. Jack Wallis got the first, after taking a free-kick the ball was headed backwards and forwards several times before it fell back to him at knee-height, and he crashed it into the net with a terrific drive. Jim Smith equalled, if not bettered, that goal after receiving the ball on the centre-line and beating three players before firing in a low shot from twenty-five yards that left Robson helpless. Such was the Dons’ dominance that at one point Arthur Maggs tried to repeat Smith’s goal and managed to run through only to shoot a shade wide. The points pushed Wimbledon up into third place and Clapton down to the bottom.
