Frank Lemmer’s injury would keep him out of the first team for the rest of the season, and lead to his retirement from the senior team at the end of the campaign, so for the midweek Isthmian League game against Kingstonian Billy Skidmore stepped in, for what would prove to be his only competitive match in the first team, despite having been reported as doing remarkably well. There was also a recall for Billy Laws, in place of Ken Twigg, who had also played his last senior game for the club.

With the exception of the goalkeepers the Dons were superior in every department, the exception only due to the performance of the former Corinthian-Casuals custodian Hounslow in keeping the score down, although Jim Haydock dealt effectively with whatever K’s threw at him during their short spells on top. Laws was unfortunate not to open the scoring when his shot rebounded off the foot of the post, and it wasn’t until ten minutes before the interval that the home side took the lead; Harry Stannard received a pass from Vic Bird and tapped it back to Jack Wallis for the opening score.

Seven minutes after the re-start Stannard again proved provider, slipping while taking a through pass but still managing to find Freddie Gauntlett, who continued his incredible scoring run and put Wimbledon two goals clear. Kingstonian upped their game and the game got vigorous for a spell, with tempers getting frayed at times, but the Dons defence held firm and Haydock’s handling was sure.
