Charlie Smith stepped in for the injured Harry Stannard but Ron Head was fit and Pat Field made way at the back for his return. Wimbledon were on the offensive for the first quarter of an hour, and created a number of struggles in the Romford area with efforts from both Charlie Smith and Vic Bird going close, but as so often previously the midfield were creating chances only for the forwards to hesitate in front of goal. Romford had no such problems and when they finally got their chance Jack Haydock was found well out of position but Kurn’s shot hit the foot of the post and out to safety. Soon afterwards Kurn tested the keeper with a high shot, then Bridge missed by inches following good work from Bridge. Back up the other end again and Charlie Smith brought the best out of Ivey with a shot along the ground, and on the half-hour mark it was namesake Jim Smith that gave the Dons the lead, heading in a cross from John Woods, but the lead only lasted five minutes before Kurn equalised from a Brookes centre. |
