Billy Cousins and Bob Sears made way for the returns of Doug Munday and Jock Woods for the first round repeat of last season’s Surrey Senior Cup final. By far the superior side throughout, only poor finishing prevented the homesters from reaching half-time with an unassailable lead. Quick, neat passing in the approach created at least a dozen chances but the forwards, and Derek Clarke in particular, were lackadaisical and frequent shots from all directions were lacking direction. Tooting were on the attack for the first ten minutes, but failed to develop any real threat and the nearest they came to goal was when Parker flicked the ball to Don Rhoades â€" the ex-Don who had returned to United after a brief spell at Plough Lane â€" only five yards out, but he was robbed before he could get his shot away. Ron Head freed Smith and as Hall, the visiting keeper, gathered Clarke bundled him to the ground. Clarke then crossed for Smith, but it was too high and the inside-right punched the ball into the net, but the officials were alert. Head switched his service to Harry Bull, but Hall was able to pick the ball from under the bar, and seconds later he pushed another shot from the same player over the bar and soon after fielded a long shot from Smith. Smith then played cat and mouse with Martin, waiting for his forwards to get in position, then delivered a perfect cross which Clarke got his head to and Hall pulled off a good save. Wallis then made a run from left-half before feeding Clarke, but he dithered and Walters gave away a corner. From the kick United scrambled the ball off the line as Wimbledon appealed for a goal. The visitors had their first shot in the twenty-sixth minute when a move down the left ended with a shot from corner with Jack Haydock completely out of position, but Pat Field was on hand to kick off the line. Unperturbed the Dons pushed forward again and Smith shot inches past the post from a Wallis pass. Rhodes ballooned over from twelve yards and Head ran onto a good centre from Woods but Hall caught his nod towards goal with ease. |
