Having beaten Bromley in the final of the London Senior Cup at Selhurst Park the previous Saturday the Tooting & Mitcham faithful were confident of not only winning, but of winning by a large score. But they had failed to reckon on Wimbledon, unchanged from the Dulwich Hamlet game, stung from losing out on the league title, putting in their best performance of the season. Harry Stannard and Vic Bird were both on brilliant form and at times they toyed with the opposition defence. The Dons defence were complete masters of the United forwards, with special mention going to Ron Head who was hardly ever beaten in a tackle. Stannard poached the lead after thirteen minutes with a low shot and further shots from both Bird and Freddie Gauntlett forced Yarnold to concede corners. The second goal was one that was talked about for many years by those who were there. Stannard picked up Doug Munday’s pass near the halfway line and swerved around Walters, then flicked the ball to Jack Wallis whose magnificent shot on the run from twenty-five yards left Yarnham floundering. Tooting’s centre-forward Parker scraped the bar with a header, but at the break the Isthmian League side were in the ascendancy. |
