Despite having originally selected an unchanged team it was deemed more prudent to rest Harry Stannard’s sore groin for the impending Amateur Cup tie, so Ron Head moved up to the attack and Pat Field returned at full-back. Stannard was left behind to watch the reserve team at Plough Lane, but he would have had a field day at Granleigh Road against a Leytonstone team with three regulars on international duty. Wimbledon started the brightest, but the home side almost took a surprise lead. F. Smith put in a harmless looking centre that looked to be going behind but Groves cleverly recovered and got to within five yards of Jack Haydock before shooting. His shot hit the post and skidded along the line and Ken Lister had to clear from underneath the bar. At the other end Charlie Smith trapped the ball then shot on the turn, grazing the crossbar. Vic Bird could have scored twice in as many minutes had he not delayed his shots and both Charlie Smith and Head had efforts that went over the bar, but it was Leytonstone that went in with a half-time lead, Trevor Bailey finishing off a cross from Patrick four minutes before lemon-time. |
