Jim Haydock, suffering from an injury to his ankle, had to make way for Arthur “Ginger” Parson and Jim Smith returned to the forward line at the expense of namesake Charlie, with Harry Stannard moving to lead the attack. Wycombe had vastly improved since their battering at Plough Lane earlier in the season and were warming up for their impending Amateur Cup semi-final. Bird and Smith both initiated good moves, but the wingers were unable to capitalise on the chances provided for them and the home side put on the pressure with two early goals through Mikrut and Butler. Wimbledon showed great determination to stay in the game, especially half-backs Ken Perkins, Jack Wallis and Ken Lister. It was Lister who reduced the arrears with a brilliant free-kick from twenty yards after twenty minutes and twice Harry Bull went close to gaining an equaliser, but could not beat Lodge in the Wanderers goal. |
