After Bob Parker had fired the Terrors in front with just two minutes on the clock, the Dons fought back and were unfortunate to still be behind at the interval. The hosts continued to push forwards and two goals in five minutes, early in the second half, finally broke the Athenian Leaguers hearts. The first came when Gauntlett headed home a Stannard cross and then the wily, old campaigner fired his side ahead from an acute angle. With rain falling heavily and the mud inches deep in places, both teams did well to keep fighting until a momentous tie, which had in total lasted 420 minutes and been watched by 42,000 spectators, was finally settled by Jimmy Smith’s late goal.
