Wimbledon’s 100% record travelled to take on a Kingstonian side that had yet to register a League win and were struggling to rebuild their side after their captain, Don Stoker, and several more of their prominent players had left for Sutton United during the summer. Wimbledon were missing the unfortunate Jack Wallis, now suffering from influenza, with Jock Woods again standing in the half-back line. The home side, relying on long passes to their wings, took the lead in the fifth minute when Holding headed in a centre from Zimmer. They continued to put pressure on the Dons’ goal and Jim Haydock had to be smart across his goal to save from Fancett. Bill Cousins then headed clear from under the crossbar to save a certain goal. Just before the break Wimbledon hit the equaliser. An over-reliance on the high ball had deprived Harry Stannard of service, K’s tall centre-half Gaffney having the better of him in the air, but just before the break he finally got free and when Ridgwell blocked his shot it rebounded to Harry Bull and the winger forced the ball home. |
