After a waterlogged pitch meant that the scheduled replay had been cancelled the previous Saturday, more than 9,000 fans took time off work to see the Wednesday afternoon replay. The TV cameras that would have captured the weekend game were not in attendance as a thunderstorm caused the pitch to turn into a quagmire during the second half. Before that Tooting had once again opened up a two goal lead only for Lister and Gauntlett to reply before the heavens opened. Despite thirty minutes of extra time, and numerous chances for the Dons, no further goals were scored although both sides had good claims for a penalty turned down as tempers boiled over with high tackles flying in.
